DIY Beeswax Food Wrap

Beeswax food wrap is becoming a popular alternative to plastic cling wrap because (1) you can repurpose your old cloth into making it, (2) it is reusable, and (3) you can restore it after wear & tear. By using the beeswax food wrap, you can reduce your plastic consumption almost by half. In my case, I cook a lot and cling wrap was something I appreciate having in my kitchen. After swapping it with beeswax food wrap, my plastic consumption significantly reduce, especially in the kitchen department.

Materials you need:

  • Cotton cloth - best to use your old t-shirt but make sure to clean it first.
  • Scissor (to cut the cloth)
  • Beeswax bead/block - if you got the block beeswax, you will need to  shred it into smaller pieces with a grater or cut it into fine pieces
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven to melt the cheese

Steps:

  1. Cut the cloth into desireable size or shape. I use my bowl to measure the size. It should be about 1 inch over the edge of the bowl.
  2. Place the cloth on the baking sheet with the inside facing upwards.
  3. Pour the beeswax onto the cloth to cover most of the surface. Once the beeswax melted, it should cover the entire cloth.
  4. Pre-heat the oven at any temperature. The key here is to get the oven hot.
  5. Put in the cloth into the oven and watch it until all the beeswax is melted. Usually, it takes about 30 seconds or depending on the size of the beeswax.
  6. Remove from the oven and let it cool and harden. Once it is cool, clean it under cold running tap water. Then leave it to dry.

Aftercare:

  • To clean after each use, clean with cold water (warm water will melt the beeswax and cause a mess) and detergent. Dry it and you're ready to use it again.
  • If the wax becomes wrinkly after a few uses, just pop it into the oven again (Step 5) to melt the wax evenly.
  • Don't dry it under the sun as it will melt the wax.
  • Keep in cool and dry area.

This is the simplest DIY you could do at home which saves you lots of money, as well as reducing plastic in your kitchen. Do try. If you're too lazy to make it yourself, you can definitely buy this from eco-friendly grocer or online. Just search for "reusable beeswax food wrap".
